When it comes to notarizing a document in Michigan, proper identification is non-negotiable. The Michigan Notary Public Act requires every notary to verify a signer’s identity using valid, government-issued photo ID with a signature.
If you’re unsure which IDs qualify — or whether that old license in your wallet still works — here’s what you need to know.
âś… Acceptable Forms of ID
To complete your notarization, you’ll need one of the following valid, unexpired forms of identification:
State-issued Driver’s License (from Michigan or any U.S. state)
State-issued Identification Card (non-driver ID)
U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card
Military ID issued by the U.S. Armed Forces (with photo and signature)
Tribal ID issued by a recognized tribal government (must include photo and signature)
Permanent Resident Card or other federally issued ID with a photo and signature
These IDs must be current, legible, and match the name on the document being notarized.
⚠️ What’s Not Acceptable
Certain IDs can’t be used for notarization in Michigan:
Expired IDs — even if recently expired, they don’t meet Michigan’s “current” requirement.
Social Security Cards — no photo or signature.
Work, student, or membership badges — not government-issued.
Birth Certificates — not sufficient on their own for ID verification.
If a signer only has an expired ID, they must obtain valid identification before the notary can proceed.
đź’ˇ Pro Tip: Remote or Online Notarization
If you’re completing your notarization remotely, the ID verification process may involve additional steps like photo capture, credential analysis, and knowledge-based authentication (KBA).
